The Office of Contemporary Art and Culture under the Ministry of Culture recently recognised seven contemporary artists through this year`s Silpathorn Award. The award was given to Pinaree Sanpitak in the field of visual arts,
Pinaree`s art installations have all been based around the image of a woman`s breast, transforming it from a mere symbol of gender to a more powerful form of universal expression.
These works assembled are not merely sketches. They are part of my art making process, a process of self-healing and self-analyzing. Some have informed larger works. Some have been a bridge to other ideas. It was a pleasure sorting through them and tracing back the work line. Going through the studio, I also came upon some printmaking plates, which greatly inspired me to work with a whole new range of materials; metal, wax, fabric, terracotta…
I could definitely see links between all of my artworks though they have varied in medium and form over the years.
The earliest pieces date from 1985. Collage works with photographs and handmade paper, drawn and painted over. They were made during my last year at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. They are concerned with ideas about confession and concealment. They are about perception. They are about the subliminal. They are about the play of the senses. They have elements which I find in my works today. Recently I have started working with photography again after a very long time just using the camera for family purposes and for the documentation of other art projects.
